Render preferences

Hi All.

In system preferences is it better to have both the GPU and CPU ticket on? What if only GPU is ticket on? Will it run faster and better with both ticket on?

Or should i turn the CPU off?

Just checking as want to make sure my render times are fast and best.

See attached. This is what i mean. Also is optix best to use?

It will run slower and worse with both checked, you should only use GPU

If you use Cycles version, enable both, and if you use
CyclesX version (blender 3.0 and later), only use GPU. :slightly_smiling_face:

And RTX should use Optix.
It is an option for RTX.

Add…

As shown in the image, Cycles (CPU/GPU Separation) and CyclesX (CPU+GPU Integration) have different rendering processing, so if you use Blender 3.0 or higher, just use GPU.

※ What if CyclesX uses the same level of CPU and GPU? CPU+GPU will perform better.

However, if the GPU performs better than the CPU, it will work with the slow CPU’s processing speed.

I was also asking myself the same thing just recently, thank you for your explanations!

Hi all,

Firstly thank you for your prompt responses and answers. I do have a couple questions though. Sorry for being new and noob to render settings and knowledge…

  1. what is cyclesx and where can i find that?

  2. even if you have a powerful device you should only use GPU no matter what? Why do they give you the option to use both?

  3. what is HIP and OneAPI? I have one of the latest devices on market and it says i cant use them? Is it because i have a geforce and the others are for orher graphic card makes?

  4. This one i would looove if you know the best one but do you know where i could find the best video/thread or explanation on what the Best setting setup for Blender is? I have followed some youtube videos from people on what the best settings are to use with your blender and some of them say do one thing and the others say do the other. I found some good tricks to increase deletes, use middle mouse, rotate around object etc but would be good to know what the best settings are for samples/resolution/noise etc on what to have it at…or should i leave them all on default. I have a recently brought a really good powerful device and i just want to make sure Blender is set up all great and with best settings which will be fast render but not lower quality and also great for speed but not overdue or ruin my device by over heating or anything. Basically just want a good settings to use as looking through them all…there is soo many haha.

Again sorry for being a noob on settings however i have seen peoples work on here and longtime follwers and the work on this site is amazing talent so want to follow the workflow/pipeline/settings you all use.

Hi,

  1. It’s the same Cycles, but just a new version that has been presented since Blender 3.2. You don’t need to do anything in order to use/enable it. Just switch to Cycles from an Eevee like in any other old Blender’s versions and you’re good to go

  2. If your GPU is faster than your CPU - use GPU instead. Of course, if, for some reason, your CPU is way faster than your GPU - use the first one. But what if they both go toe-to-toe? Well, in that case, I would’ve used both of them, but, only if you ARE 100% SURE that they are both powerful in compared to each other. Otherwise, your render processing will start to get slower. As for the question “Why they did that?”, I think I’ve already answered that question. But, at the same time, bear in mind, that for some cases it is better to use a GPU only. Here’s a good answer to that question:

  1. What is HIP:

HIP

What is OneAPI:

Shortly, it’s two different technologies, one made by AMD while the second one is made by Intel. They both have been made to accelerate the rendering process. So the question “Why can’t I use them?” is because you have a different manufacturer, yours is Nvidia.

  1. That’s a rhetorical question, in my opinion. You ask what Blender’s settings are gonna be the most suitable for you, based on your hardware that has recently been purchased. Well, my answer: it’s up to you. I mean, it’s no wonder that, like you said “One guy says this while the other guy says that”. Of course they will! They both have their different opinions on that question and, of course, they’ll be doing that in their own specific way. I would’ve wondered if they didn’t. You got yourself a new PC and just installed the Blender and so on. A’ight, that’s fine, now it’s time for you to start customizing it in the way YOU want it. There’s no one out here (including myself) who could’ve helped you with that question. Yes, you may find some trick here and that just to get yourself some basic knowledge, like, for example, where I can change the color of this and that element and so on. But if you’re Googling a question like “Help me to customize my Blender in the way I want”, well, I’m not sure somebody out there is gonna help you with that. It’s like the client doesn’t know what he wants, but telling his freelancer “Do it”.

Hope that helps you

Cheers,
Sergey

Personally, it’s best to test different situations yourself.
Multiple scenes do not get the same results with the same settings.

You can receive several demo files at the link below.
Test it with this :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi All,

Firstly I just want to say a big thank you for your prompt and detailed responses. That means alot. I have turned off the CPU and only clicked on the GPU.

Your answers have been great support and learning from it!

Love this forum as people don’t laugh or mock at the questions and really support those that don’t know.

Thank you
