Our family loves hamburgers so much that we make this homemade hamburger recipe once a week during grilling season.

It only takes 4 ingredients and 10 minutes to prepare this hamburger recipe. And it results in the best burgers you’ve ever had! They are a testament to the fact that delicious food doesn’t have to be complicated!

Hamburger Recipe: Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Ground beef. For the best results, use 85% lean ground beef. You can use 80% or 93% lean beef as well.
  • Barbecue Sauce. Choose your favorite barbecue sauce. I suggest this organic BBQ sauce!
  • Montreal Steak Seasoning. This is a staple in our house. Try this variety or this one.
  • Olive oil. avocado oil or canola oil can be used in place of olive oil.

How to Make Hamburgers

Let’s walk through how to make homemade hamburger patties step by step, and don’t forget to watch the video!

Begin by preheating the grill to high (about 450 to 500 degrees F)

Then, combine the ground beef, barbecue sauce and 1 Tablespoon Montreal seasoning in a large bowl.

Next, form the mixture into 8, quarter-pound patties that are about 4” in diameter. Set the patties on a large baking sheet.

Brush one side of the patties with olive oil and use the remaining Montreal seasoning to lightly sprinkle each patty (you will be sprinkling both sides of the patties to use the seasoning accordingly).

Then, flip the hamburger patties and repeat, brushing the second side with olive oil and sprinkling with seasoning.

Once the patties are ready, grill the burgers on the first side for 3-4 minutes, flip and grill on the second side for 3 minutes or until they reach an internal temperature of 155 to 160 degrees F in the center (this varies depending on how you like your burgers cooked and the thickness of your patties).

Prepare in Advance

You can also form the patties in advance to grill later in the day, or the next day).

To do this, form the patties and place them on the baking sheet. Cover the baking sheet in plastic wrap and store the formed hamburger patties in the refrigerator.

Remove them from the refrigerator to warm close to room temperature about 30 minutes before grilling.

Serve

Serve immediately on homemade hamburger buns with your preferred condiments alongside your favorite barbecue side dishes.

How to Store/Freeze Hamburgers

If you find yourself with leftover homemade hamburger patties, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Or, freeze the patties in a single layer in an airtight container for up to 1 month. Reheat in the oven or on the stovetop.
