The Lutterloh Golden Rule system is a unique pattern system that allows you to store a large number of patterns in a small space (at least until after you’ve used them), and to make them to fit any body. This is especially useful for those of us who fall outside the range of most commercially-available sewing patterns!
The way it works is there are small-scale patterns and a special scaling measuring tape. By inserting pins at specific points in the mini-pattern, and at the appropriate point on the scaling tape, you can trace the pattern at full-size – whatever “full” size is for your needs. (See the video below for more about how it works.)
When you first purchase the system, you get the tools you need for tracing the patterns at full size, plus a book of 97 different fashions. On the front of a page you’ll see the images (like the front of a standard pattern envelope). On the back you’ll find the mini-patterns.
I assume you will need to copy the patterns in order to recreate them at full size, because otherwise you will need to cut up your pattern book and punch holes in it, ruining the illustrations on the reverse.
There is a wide variety of patterns in the book, ‘though most of them are women’s patterns. If you need/want further patterns, you can purchase supplements. They’re somewhat random, though. It would be helpful, in my opinion, if they would sell them in groupings by category. For instance, there is one maternity pattern, one men’s pattern, and three children’s patterns in the original collection. There are dresses, pants, skirts, tops, coats, swimsuits…classic and modern styles, and even a few that look either costumey or formal. (There are a few special editions that have either exclusively children’s, men’s, or classic fashions. But most of the supplements are a mix, like the original. I’d love to see a maternity edition!) Each supplement includes 40 new patterns. The special editions each contain 70-76 new patterns.
You will, of course, need paper to trace the larger patterns on. You can purchase paper from them if you like. I still have most of a huge roll of white butcher paper I ordered years ago that I use for tracing patterns onto.
(And here is a snazzy tip for making sure shoulders are perfect!)
This would make a great gift for a friend or family member who sews, since there are sooo many patterns in one “package.”
