“25 To Life”

  • EGM, March 2006 (201)
  • At the height of Rockstar Games’ notoriety everybody wanted to ape what they did for profit. Some couldn’t afford to build an expansive, open-world so the alternative was to embrace the gritty, urban concept that came with it; mixed with hip-hop culture for good measure. Most of these games didn’t click with anybody.

25 To Life was such a game. You had a choice to play as either a cop or a gangster during a violent crime wave and had the option to take the war online. The game garnered bad press for glorifying the gangster lifestyle, which was probably an intentional bid to sell the game on notoriety alone, and a New York senator called for a ban on the game. However, the game itself was panned by critics and received a lukewarm response by consumers.
