The battery thing got me too. It's definitely cheap remote.. It feels very flimsy and when I first got it something was rattling around on the inside. I tried to put AAA batteries and it as well, and after visiting the Amazon page, I am not the only person with this problem. When I put AA batteries in it, it works just fine. Immediately turned to the TV on and off, turn the volume on and off, and all of the buttons feel fine.
