"Description:
Cumin seeds can be grown for a versatile little herb plant that has fine, divided, aromatic leaves. The flowers are small and white, sometime slightly pink. It is one of the oldest known herbs to be cultivated as both a medicinal herb and as a culinary herb. Cumin was at one time widely used as a culinary herb throughout Europe, but today, the similar yet milder caraway has taken its place. However, the Cumin herb is still used in Mexican foods and in the curry powder mixture that is in Indian foods. Growing Instructions:
To start the plants indoors, sow the seeds in peat pots 4-6 weeks before the last spring frost. Place in a sunny window or provide heat. For improved germination, soak the seeds for 8 hours before planting. The seeds should germinate in 2 weeks. Transplant or direct sow about a week after the last frost when the soil has warmed. Cumin grows best in well drained, fertile soil and full sun. Plant the seeds 1/4"" deep and 4"" apart in rows 18"" apart. Thinning the seedlings to 8"" apart as soon as they develop leaves. Water the plants regularly, letting the soil dry out between watering. Harvest leaves as needed. To collect the seeds, allow the pod to ripen and turn brown gathering the clusters of pods and allow them to dry out completely out of direct sunlight. Rub them gently to remove the see and store in an airtight container."
