Coping Saws

Coping saws are a little bigger and more solidly built than fret saws and normally use a saw blade with transverse locking pins in the ends. The blade is not simply clamped in place, as with a lighter fret saw: rather the pins are inserted into sockets in the frame and then the blade is tensioned. This allows for a much higher tension in a more solid frame and so works better in heavier materials.

The types of work you can use the coping saw for is similar to that of the fret or scroll saw, except that as the curves get tighter, the scroll saw becomes harder to use. The choice of saw blades is also limited compared to what is available for fret saws. When you need to work quickly, or the forms you need to cut are relatively large and simple, the scroll saw works the best.

Coping Saw PUK Vario 170
This unusually solid small coping saw has an ergonomic grip in plastic and a galvanized 10 x 5 mm rectangular steel bow. The 170 mm long saw blade is inserted into the ends of the bow, and can be tensioned as needed with the knurled knob in the handle.

The bow allows for cutting up to 67 mm deep. Such a saw is indispensable for all kinds of jobs and no job-site tool box or workshop tool cabinet should be without one. It comes with a saw blade for woodworking. Blades for metal can also be purchased. Made in Germany by Josef Haunstetter.

PEGAS Coping Saw Frame (blade not included)
This solid coping saw has a wooden grip and a bow made of steel that is rectangular in section and 10 x 5 mm. Insert a 170 mm long blade (not included) in the bow and tension by turning the round hand grip and/or the knurled screw. The blade can be rotated through 360°. Made in Switzerland.

The saw’s bow allows for a cutting depth of up to 125 mm. The ability of the blade to be rotated as needed makes this saw versatile. Blade not included!. The distance between the locking pins is 163 mm.

KNEW CONCEPTS Coping Saw with Blade 170 mm
The blade is tensioned by a cam-lever and pulls so taut that the blade "sings" when plucked. Make turns that are tighter than ever before.

The solid steel indexing blade-hooks lock in eight 45° positions for a full 360° rotation. The hooks are spring loaded to prevent inadvertent rotation. Each hook assembly must be squeezed together to index. When released, the internal spring locks them in position again.

Machined from 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) thick 6061-T6 aluminum. Weighs only 280 g.
